To understand the amount of courage the women in this story had, you have to know a little about the culture of that time. Although women in ancient Egypt did have some independence, pharaohs (kings) had absolute power and were even considered to be like gods. Furthermore, the new king mentioned in Exodus 1 did not care about the Israelites but thought of them as an infestation that needed to be crushed. So for the two Israelite (or Hebrew) midwives to disobey the orders of the king meant they were risking their lives. And the mother of Moses was just as brave. None of them knew how important their part in God’s plan was, but through their strength, a future leader of God’s people was born. They simply made the next right choice.
